I remmeber reading on this board about an XP solution inside Vista. Anyone have more info on which program to obtain this? I wish to run Windows XP INSIDE of my Vista Ultimate box |

I just ran a google search for Virtual PC 2007 from Microsoft.. Is this a suitable idea? |
VirtualPC or VMWare add a lot of overhead. By the time you get it running, I suspect the XP will be as slow or slower than the native Vista host. But, if you have a reason other than performance to want to run XP, it can work fine. I believe I read that the license for XP home does not allow it to be run in a virtual machine, so to be legal you would need XP pro. |
crap, I just installed a full working Virtual PC setup...and found out theres no USB support!!! Which is better of the 2, VirtualBox or VMWare? |
What are you trying to accomplish? Is it a compatability issue or something else? |
I have a usb dongle that only work on XP...(work related) Anyhow, tried both VirtualBox and VMware... but this dam dongle's software wont allow me to run on a virtual machine. It errors and read "TYou cannot run this application on a virtual machine" I use this dongle daily, so its annoying to have to boot up the XP laptop just for a 10 minute or so work time. (This program wont run on Vista) |

Have you tried running it in Vista's XP compatability mode? |
vmware needs to have the right drivers for everything to work. it does add a lot of overhead too like someone mentioned. I would just go back to XP if I were you. |

The guy whom developed this VNC program designed it with XP in mind, and I cannot get/ find the drivers for Vista... We use both VM and VPC on PCs with 6-8GB and three is NO perceivable diffidence in performance of a virtualized XP session and a native one running identical resources in non 3D applications. The trick to getting desired performance with ANY virtualized OS is to properly setup and optimize the OS for virtualization. If you are simply installing XP or any other OS out of the box OS with no post install tweaking for the then you will be disappointed every time. |

FYI in case you are interested in the solution to your security dongle dilemma in a Virtual PC with no USB support you need to use a USB to serial adapter (assuming you have a physical port) and then edit the XP registry to add serial support (Google it) We have encountered this problem several times with legacy serial and USB hardware security dongles and clients wanting to run their associated apps in a VPC session. |
