Looking to buy an external hard drive an no next to nothing about them. I'd like to back up my computer, (40 Gig) and then I'd like to also save movies and songs to it as well. 3 Questions:
What size is recommended? What brands should I look at? What features are essential and that I should look for when I make my purchase?

I don't mind the 3.5's. I can usually get more Gigs on the dollar. If you like something that takes up less space, then go for the 2.5's. But if you want movies, etc, then you should figure out how many Gigs you want and how many drives you want sitting around.

I've tried WD's MyBooks, Simpletechs, Fantom's, Lacies, custom. Usually I just go for what's on sale. THe only time I've ever had a problem was with a 500G MyBook which just died on me after 2 years.

Thanks for the help, but what the heck is a 2.5

2.5" and 3.5" refers to the width of the hard drive size.

OP, please check out the The official external ENCLOSURE thread for some good background information on the various enclosures out there.

If you get a 3.5" External HD, make sure the power supply is plugged into a UPS. You don't want to risk losing data or corrupting the whole drive due to a power surge!
