What operating system?
Vista - get at least 2 GB
XP - get at least 1 GB
Beyond that, look to reduce your need for RAM. Look at what programs are always running. A good indicator is the number of icons in the system tray (lower right corner of your screen, where the time is).
A lot of programs like to start when Windows starts so they will open quicker when you need them, or so they can check for updates at least once a day. Decide if you really need everything that's starting up with Windows. On the programs that you do let start up, check "preferences" or "options" to see if you can reduce the frequency they check for updates. (Your antivirus program should probably check at its most frequent rate.)
