I'm looking for a deal on undercoating that will deaden the noise inside a car. I am taking a road trip pretty soon and wanted to get this job done. No one seems to advertise this service in my area, so I'm looking for any tips. TIA. |

You need to hit the car stereo forums, this issue is asked all the time. Basically, you buy rubberized rolls of sound deadening material which looks similar to self-sticking roofing paper (but don't use roofing paper itself as it has an asphaltic smell you'll never get rid of). You take all your seats, door panels, and carpeting out then apply the material. It can be laborous taking everything out and being careful not to damage plastic trim which breaks easily. If you just want some minimal effective deadening to be done easily, consider doing just the door panels and firewall between the front seats and engine. Do the trunk if you have a hatch. If you're unwilling to do this yourself, any car stereo shop can do it for you. |
Is it effective? Does it really deaden sound? I read that car manufacturers essentially sprayed asphalt into the bottom of your car to quiet the cabin. It was a cheap, but heavy so it costs in gas mileage. Supposedly anything lighter really raises the cost. But I never see soundproofing as a factory option, so I assumed it was not something that could be done after-market. How much does a whole vs partial job usually cost? |
Thanks. I did a preliminary search and found this place that is a chain called ziebart. They have a service that sprays some kinda liner on the bottom of the car. Haven't found any particular reviews on this, but there was an issue someone had that you don't want to leave "pockets" b/c water/rust can gather there. However, I think this poster was referring to the rust proof service not sure if that's the same as the soundproof. Hadn't heard that about MPG being affected. I'll keep researching... |

As for Ziebart, they have been around for decades and have been very reputable over the years. Those of us in the "rust belt" still use them for undercoating or rustproofing on some vehicles (mainly 4x4s that are used in the winter) - but since the automakers have vastly improved corrosion resistance, they are big into add-ons. Keep in mind that most vehicles are designed and assembled to be as quiet as feasable without adding a lot of weight. The curve of this panel and the shape of that panel have as much to do with sound as styling. Don't expect to make a rough riding and noisy vehicle turn into anything but a slightly quieter rough riding and noisy vehicle. |

It is loud enough that you have to almost shout to talk to people in the back row (when doing 55-60mph in the highway). |

You can go for an asphalt based backing (like Dynamat) and apply it to your floors and doors and it will make a huge difference. I have done my whole car in an alternative to Dynamat. You could also go with Second Skin. The owners name is Anthony and makes sludges that you can apply instead of having to roll down any of the deadener. He also makes all different products and if you call him, he is more than happy to help. I have also used RAAMmat in my car. I did 2-3 layers and my Honda Accord is quieter than any Lexus out there. I used about 100 sq ft, which isn't too much. 2 layers on the floor/doors/trunk. |
