My son will start college this week as a engineering freshman. He has a Ti 83, do you think the Ti 84+ is better for engineering students ??? |

TI-83 and the TI-84 are pretty much the same (TI-84 just looks better and has more RAM). I recommend a TI-89 Titanium for engineering - it has much more features than the TI-83 and TI-84 (and harder to use). |
He won't be needing TI-84 anytime soon. The differences between 83 and 84 are so insignificant. A lot of Engineering or Math majors do not use calculator, but instead memorize all the formulas needed. |
FYI most professors do not allow students to use TI-86 or TI-89 because they are too powerful that they'll do everything for you if you just plug the numbers. |

thanks, my son just came to me this weekend telling me he needs a graphing calc for school. As a FW'r it hurt me knowing that there were deals on this in the past. he even showed me a Radio Shack "sale" for $90 - and I told him that doesn't do it for me. |
Wow, I feel like a Pfizer salesman at a generic drug convention. After taking 165 credits of engineering classes at 3 campuses, I can only supply this recommendation: There's absolutely no excuse not to buy them a TI-89 and a Casio FX 115ms. Owning these two calculators is like owning socks and underwear for science majors. Any other calculator is a marketing scam. There's a reason why the ti-89 has cost >$130 since it was released in 1998. There's no excuse for paying less than $130 on a calculator when you're spending $60k+ on an education. If you honestly think professors don't allow ti-89's (which 95% do), they should have a 115ms as a backup and know how to use it. It will be the most powerful calculator you can use on standardized tests which don't allow ti-89's. *sigh* All in fun |

Though professors sometimes wont allow them on tests, they are still extremely useful. Easy to use and amazing software. Getting an 84 wouldn't be much use to him-it is highly designed for statistics. P.S. Get him condoms. |

As a Chemical Engineer (who graduated 6 years ago) I'll 3rd the recommendation for the TI-89. I started with a TI-86 thinking it would be good enough and that I'd consider moving on to a TI-89 later on if I felt it was worthwhile. This was a poor decision as there's a learning curve for each of these calculators. When you're taking an exam you don't exactly have a lot of time to try to page through your calculator's instruction manual or otherwise monkey with it to find the specific menu or function you need and understand how it works. You won't need the capabilities of the TI-89 (VS other models) for most problems, but once I learned how to use it I was amazed at how much time I was able to save and how much less frustrating a number of previously tedious tasks become. Get recommendations from senior students in your program and select your calculator that way (then wait for a good deal on that model). Also as hiroler suggests you'll definitely want a less-advaned standby that you know how to use efficiently for exams that don't allow your normal calculator. |
