Hey everyone,

While I know that this won't affect too many people, BUT, USAA is expanding their membership to include the following groups of individuals.

* Military retirees who served honorably, regardless of when they retired
* Military personnel honorably discharged on or after Jan. 1, 1996
* Widows and widowers of military members killed in action while eligible

edit: I saw that it was mentioned in the USAA thread, but I figure this should get it's own thread to put everyone on notice.

Thanks, OP. Not sure yet what my new membership benefits are, but I joined now that I'm eligible. I guess I'll find out later if this is advantageous.

Completely worth it, if only for their deposit@home service.

I just found out a month ago that USAA has leased out our names and personal information to some company called Zag! I signed up to buy a car and was contacted by what I thought were USAA members. However, when they called me (several times in one day, I might add), the representatives were rude, did not know what the (blank) they were talking about and lied to me about being with USAA. Further investigation, proved this to be untrue. WHen I called the number back, it was some internet company in Santa Monica. I guess...however, I got a little concerned when the rough-sounding man on the phone asked me for my credit card number???? This was a very strange experience for me! My family have been USAA members for two generations now! My dad purchased a car through USAA and did not have this kind of trouble...they (USAA) negotiated the price and told me where to pick it up!!! I do NOT appreciate this Zag or whatever company! when you get a call from one of them make sure that you DO NOT give out your credit card #. A neighbor of mine had a similar experience with the credit card request and her # was used by the guy requesting the # to make a lot of internet charges!!! Be careful.

I'm sorry you have had a negative experience with USAA. I'm curious though if you have called them to inform them that the company they are using has such horrible service which does not align with the USAA way of doing things? I would, so that evidence is built and hopefully the company, or the employee you dealt with, was taken care of.

Looks like the car buying service is outsourced to Zag. I know USAA outsources many of their other services too.

Am I wrong or does the retiree need to be a officer?

Post that phone number here, if you wish.

I will call and talk to them tomorrow. After that, they will forget what their name is, where they came from, or what day of the week it is.

I do about 80% of my banking with USAA. To me they may not have the best rates but their customer service is great. Their Deposit at home service is also great and saves me the hassle of going to a bank.

They expanded membership first to NCO's, then to all enlisted ranks back in the mid 90's. USAA is available to all service members now. With that said, I believe their current expansion also applies to the enlisted ranks too.

Great news!!!

Any promos going on? Also, for just Savings / Checking, is there a hard pull?

WOW, they also have "deposit at home"... that probably makes it worthwhile all by itself!

For reference, they're just like Penfed, they're almost 99% pullers of EQ. I've been with USAA for 13 years throughout my military career and never had them pull anything else. Good Luck.

I joined up. Opened savings/checking (not sure about the Hard Pull question). However, I can't get to deposit@home. I've been reading the old long thread trying to figure out if it's just a timing issue or something else. I think maybe I need a credit card with them to be eligible for deposit@home. I sent CS an email but haven't heard back yet.

Just went from stepchild to member with one phone call based on the later cutoff. Grateful to be in, and hope this is a step in the direction of letting in all veterans, especially those folks who like me had served as enlisted people and because of when separated never before had a window during which they could have joined.

My father-in-law was a member, he got my wife a membership, and I got in through Marraige. I will honestly say that getting USAA has been a huge perk of marraige. I have been nothing but impressed since I started using them.

Yes, you need a credit product to get deposit@home.
