Has anyone "discovered" a phrase, trademark it, and made money off the term? I'm looking to trademark a company name / slogan and I think it may have some value in the long distant future. I'm just curious if anyone has trademark/patent a phrase (and how) and I am more interested how you can monetize the trademark.

I'm fairly sure STFU is already taken.

Did Paris Hilton try that already?

As the soup nazi would say... No soup(money) for you. You need to read some basics about trademarks and you will probably find out why your idea won't work.

I think "hookers and blow" and "codename47" are probably already trademarked.

You don't "discover" a phrase, rather you "invent" it.

In order to trademark something, you must actually use it in commerce at some point, i.e. sell goods or services in association with it. You really can't just slap it on a t-shirt and have it be your phrase (although good lawyering can get you close).

This isn't legal advice, of course.

The goal of trademarking a phrase isn't to make money off it. It's to keep other people from ripping off a name that you've invested marketing dollars in and a brand that you've built up. Coca-cola isn't interested in selling people the right to say "coca-cola" in the subway; they're concerned about the phrase "coca-cola" being associated only with products that are actually Coke and not some dude on the corner selling pisswater in a can or some rival soft-drink conglomerate elbowing in on their market with a competing product coincidentally called "coca-cola."

I'm still waiting on my FatCash for "Pocket the difference"...only my phrase was "Pocket Pool is different"...but you can see how they are related.

I’m pretty sure Donald Trump had profits in mind when he filed applications to register “You’re Fired”.

I trademarked a name for a school intending to use it.

Then some people came along and sent me a letter telling me they were hijacking the name and to STFU and STFD while they cancelled my trademark.

Long story short, we went to war.

And after I occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia... and advanced towards Gori... they begged for a ceasefire and had Sarkozy deliver me a cashier's check.

I tried to trademark "The Beaver Whisperer", but apparently it was too similar to a previously trademarked phrase that they wouldn't allow it.

WARNING:

I have trademarked the following phrase as of August 18th:

"Trademarking a phrase and make money off it?" (TM)

Anyone find using the phrase will be in violation of TM law and I will be sending cease and desist letters to them. I will also be sending a bill of $1,000 for each violation.

Just a warning to you SS7Man... You're now first on my list.
