*** 10/03/08 *** - Bush quickly signs bailout bill: "No" converts jump aboard massive plan, and House passes the legislation. And Dow Jones loses over 400 points after approval to close at lowest point in 3 years. (last part I added you will not find in the headlines)

If you should be so inclined, contact your Congressmen. Tell them you are sorely disappointed and even outraged by their vote and the passage of this plan. Tell them you are angry that they are wasting your money. Tell them you will remember their role in this most wasteful plan, and that you will not forget how they voted against their constituents.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** This time around, the pork-injected bailout plan was expected to pass. Nevertheless, I am sorely disappointed in the Congressmen that changed their votes and those who supported this ludicrous package from the start. Here is another message from Ron Paul, and it almost makes me want to cry today. Not for the crooked CEO's, not for all the disingenuous politicians, but rather for our failed Democracy, and the future of our children and country. ***

In the voice of Ron Paul:

This time last week, the biggest bailout in the history of the world seemed to be a fait accompli.

Last weekend, the Fed Chairman and the Secretary of the Treasury had harsh words of doom and gloom for Congressional leaders, with the rest of the administration parroting along, and by last Monday it seemed both parties were about to fall in line and vote our Republic away by socializing the banking industry through this bailout.

Foolish business behavior was about to be rewarded, and propped up a little longer, the bubble blown a little bigger, and our coming Depression made that much greater, but then something happened on the way to the House floor.

Citizens made their voices heard.

The real story behind the story in Congress this week was the thousands of calls and emails sent to Representatives, clogging up inboxes and even slowing down the House internet system.

Slowly, like the Titanic turning around, sentiments on the Hill shifted, and we heard Congressmen capitulating and changing their tune a little, desperately trying to find ways to salvage the bailout without completely enraging their constituencies.

Now we hear about taxpayer protections, about golden parachutes, and about other nuances that hardly cover up the fact that we would be creating more money out of thin air and further devaluing the dollar!

The problem is not HOW the government is spending this money; it’s the fact that the government is spending this money. We don’t have it. We are already nearly $10 tn in debt, not including unfunded liabilities.

We already spend about $1 tn a year we don’t have on our overseas empire. Now nearly $1 tn more is somehow supposed to magically appear and solve all our problems! No — creating more money might delay the inevitable for some well-connected banks on Wall Street, but in a few weeks we will find ourselves right back in this same position, but much poorer.

The unfortunate thing is that we’ve already spent at least $700 BN on other bailouts that did not solve the problem. And while all this negotiation was taking place, the auto industry was quietly bailed out, with no controversy, no discussion, to the tune of $25 BN.

Inevitably, it appears Congress will call their constituents’ bluff and the bailout will pass, because that is the habit Wall Street and Washington have fallen into. People are right to be concerned about our financial future.

I’ve been talking for 30-some years about reasons we need to be concerned and change our ways. We find ourselves now in a position of no good options, and no silver bullets.

But the worst thing we can do is to compound our problems by intensifying the mistakes of the past.

We do have tough economic times ahead, no doubt, no matter what we do, even if we do nothing.

The question is, will we have the courage to take our medicine now and get it over with, or will we prolong the misery for many years to come? I’m less and less optimistic about the answer to that question.

Added: Here is a 1-click mass email to senators and add the following body in the email. (Though I have heard from many that emails have much less impact compared to faxes) - thanks to Mike Shedlock!!!

Added: Here is a phone number directory for all the Senators of the 110th Congress. Chances are it will be a machine, but it will give you an opportunity to really voice your opinion!

Added: Find and contact your federal, state, and local officials by zip code.

Added: *** DC Public Protest this Saturday 9/27/08 on the West Lawn ***.

Added: Public Protest of the Bailout Bill (images)

Added: Ron Paul lays it all out in 2 minutes.

Contact your member of Congress. They will listen. This is proof!

This is not so much a discussion thread as it is a contact info thread on how to exercise our constitutional right.

Metro Fax

I have an existing email fax number but I opened up a second account just now for purpose of faxing every senator in the US. If a senator is missing from the list it because they did not have a listed fax number. I did not count them up.

I chose to go with MetroFax. There are others services, but 1000 pages a month for $12.95 was the best overall deal I could find. There is a $10 activation fee, but the second month is also free. If you elect to do the same, mention my name and I will get a free month.

Green!

Great Post!

I usually sit these out, but this is too important. Passage of this 'scare tactic' bill is an afront to every responsible, taxpayer in this country.

Do this for your family.

I think the paulson plan is the injection of a lifeline the economy needs, but it should be coupled with the suggestions presented in your proposal. ie: cutting down taxes and encouraging saving (ie: cd's, etc)

Or call the Congressional switchboard toll-free and have them connect you to your representatives: 1-877-ROB-U-ROB.

I'm not kidding; that's the real number.

It is inevitable that the bailout will happen.

The bailout won't work, all it will do is postpone and transfer the crap to the gov. Thus it will encourage more people to be irresponsible and greedy.
But the wording of the bailout is just plain crazy.
Bush wants to give Paulson complete and unquestionable authority without any judicial, executive and congressional scrutiny or reprisals, the estimated sum of one trillion dollars to do with as he see's fit in disregard to any and all laws foreign and domestic.

Bush has just gone totally insane if he thinks anyone would fall for that.

The plan may happen but it will have tons of oversight and any funky stuff will have to be answered for and nobody is going to get a pardon or get out of jail free card.

I'm with you, but I'm afraid its too late.

Read this and you will see that subprime is a drop in the bucket to Credit Derivatives.

AIG's potential collapse and credit derivatives

To cut to the chase if AIG fails it triggers $180 billion in credit derivative payouts. This causes other companies to fail and all the dominoes fall.

Its a crummy way of doing business and its obvious we need tight regulation of credit derivatives as well as mortgages but the horse is out of the barn already so to speak.

We need a total revamp of the financial system as we know it, and we need to limit the pain the taxpayer feels for the sins of others. But the bailout was necessary to prevent total insolvency unfortunately.

You are confusing the bailouts. The AIG bailout was a bridge loan. OP's bailout was referring to the TARP, a.k.a. RTC2.0. It is designed for the treasury to purchase up to $700B of toxic assets which threatens to tank the majority of the financial firms (banks and i-banks).

I'd say if they did not let Lehman fail; or after Lehman failed, stand fast behind AIG (which supposedly had only a funding problem, not solvency problem), the system wide bailout could have been avoided.

After the 180 on AIG, the whole world knew that Paulson had no idea what was going on. Then some form of system wide bailout became inevitable.

President Bush Balk at reducing Executives wages

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Congress, Bush team agree on some bailout terms
Monday September 22, 10:16 pm ET
By Julie Hirschfeld Davis, Associated Press Writer
Administration accepts some Dem demands in bailout bill, but haggles over exec compensation

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Scrambling for a swift deal on the $700 billion bailout for failing financial firms, key Democrats and Bush administration officials agreed Monday to include mortgage help for beleaguered homeowners but wrangled over other issues, including "golden parachutes" for executives who benefit from the unprecedented rescue.

Democrats demanded that the measure limit pay packages for executives of companies helped by the biggest financial rescue since the Great Depression. The administration was balking at that, and also at a proposal by Democrats to let judges rewrite mortgages to lower bankrupt homeowners' monthly payments. President Bush prodded Congress during the day to pass the rescue plan quickly, declaring, "The whole world is watching."

I found this shocking: President Bush balk at the idea that executivies who causes the greatest financial fallout should have their wages and benefits reduced. Basically, Bush wants the failing executives to be rewarded for their failure and mistakes and punish the taxpayers-- a common theme in this administration. Say no to FREE Bailout

When I heard Bush announce the bailout I got sick to my stomach. He said "700 Billion" and " for bad mortgages" in the same sentence. I was extremely furious after hearing that.

Congress is going to allow the bailout after some minor changes. It is inevitable. No matter how much we kick and scream our politicians are going to ignore us. If 100% of the voters wrote into congress, they would still ignore us. They probably wouldnt even read our complaints until 2 weeks after they pass the bailout. It is so frustrating.

congress is supposed to represent the people.
if the people aren't heard, this government isn't doing what our forefathers and the constitution intended it to do.

probably one of the only reasons that there isn't an uprising or a revolution right at this moment is because over 80% of the american population are totally ignorant of the matter at hand and that anybody caught trying to start any kind of civil act (or disobedience) will get picked up so quickly, regardless of rights. If the government ignores our rights to be heard and properly represented, why would they bother acknowledging any of our other rights?

Fact of the matter is, as many people have already pointed out, the US has socialism for the rich. and dare I say it's moving rather quickly to becoming a very fascist country.
