This is EQUAL to a referral bonus.
I am a zipcar member, and when referring a member to sign up, I have the option to received a $50 referral bonus for myself, split the bonus $25/$25 with my friend, or give $50 to my friend.
I've done a few referrals for friends and I've always given them the full $50 driving credit. This never expires too.
So good deal nonetheless, but keep in mind that if you know someone with a membership this deal never expires.
If that free 1-year membership deal comes back, that is a HOT deal.

Has anyone had any problems with Zip Car?
I rented a BMW for a weekend in Boston and it was such a pain.
First, We got to the car and the pass to remove the car from the garage was missing! The attendant finally opened the door after insisting we speak to the customer service.
Second, My girlfriend was looking through the interior for the pass and ended up finding used male and female condoms! What a joke... To top it off whoever had it before spilled booze in the interior and decided to leave the left over bottles in the trunk.
I called Zip Car and they basically told me that they would speak to the person and have someone clean it ASAP. They totally blew me off.
Not my favorite company ...

Just a tad overkill here?
Seriously though, been a Zipcar member in Boston for nearly 3 years now and have never had a problem with a vehicle (knock on wood). They rely on users to keep the cars clean and gassed up. If there is a problem, you as a customer are typically the first to alert them. They don't have a centralized depot of vehicles like a typical car rental company so simply giving you a different car isn't really an option. If I were you, I would perhaps push for a refund of my rental fee or perhaps some driving credit for your inconvenience...
When I first used Zipcar it was great - Cars were clean and customer service was great. But now most of the time the cars are dirty and you get the brush off from customer service reps. It seems like zipcar is more concerned about building a larger customer base than canceling accounts of people that abuse their cars.
If anyone here is willing to split the $50 referral ($25 each) then please PM me as I plan to sign up soon.
