LG Blu-ray burner at Circuit City $229
This seems to be the hottest price for a blu-ray burner. It also includes software for playing blu-ray disks. No HD-DVD support, unlike earlier versions of this drive.

I thought someone else would post this first. I decided to wait to post before I decided against buying. I'm going to wait. Right now I don't have any need for the blu-ray burning feature, but I would like to be able to play the disks.

This is around $250 at most other places, including Newegg. Free shipping or in-store pickup. FatCash for 2%. Or go through Discover and get 5% back.

I'd attest that this is the best Blu-Ray burner on the market, reviewed as superior to Lite-Ons that cost much more and run much slower. The HD-DVD compatibility was a nice bonus on the GGW- model, however, at about the same price.

i think there's a CC coupon code for 10% off computer stuff floating around. not sure if optical drives apply. otherwise a normal 10% off 199 would help save a bit too.

this would be sweet to have on a PC but I can't imagine how expensive buying BD media would be.

no thanks.

I'll sadly stick to my DVD DL until Blu-Ray is a similar price.

Heh, 10 Pack of Single Layer Blu-ray 25GB would be the same price as this Drive heh.

Wow, that's less than I paid for my 2X CD burner!

There was a great deal from the very same retailer (CC) where BD-R media were $5 a piece, it lasted a day or so.

so you can actually copy blueray movies now?

Will it be the same 1080p quality? or compressed?

Blu Ray discs are now selling for as low as $5-7 each (CC, Fry's, etc.), so your statement is neither funny, nor accurate.

I bought this drive from eBay back when they had the 35% live.com discount and paid about $160. To me it was worth it at that price point. It's been working great. No problems. And would recommend it.

It does come with a re-writable blu-ray disc, though I think it's only 25gigs that came with it. Those blanks are expensive currently but I wanted a blu-ray player and the 35% off deal made it worthwhile.

Ive only seem them in the 8's local. Also thats for a 25gb disc, 50gb discs are still high.

so how many gigs is a normal blue ray movie from retalier?

And again... do you loose quality backing up blue ray movies?

The movies are made on either 25gb or 50gb discs (although I believe the majority are on 50gb discs).....It really depends on the movie as to how much space it actually takes up.....in theory you could back up your movies without losing any quality, since you'd be doing a 1:1 transfer (unless you went from a 50gb disc to a 25gb disc; then it would depend on what special features you wanted to port over and how large the actual movie file was) but you'll probably need some different software to rip the movie to your HDD first.

You can tsmux the main movie and audio, often gets down to below the 25gb limit... but why bother? 8 bucks and a lot of effort for an illegal copy?? but no, no quality loss.

Unless you're a video creating guru there is not need for blu-ray on a PC yet especially at this price and the price of disks. There is simply no need nor will there be in the near future.
