I've never bought from Abe's of Maine but they seem to have a decent reseller ratings score. Anyone have experience there?

The price on this camera keeps dropping at various stores, but I also want to make sure I buy from a reputable place that isn't going to try to cancel my order if I don't buy any "accessories".

Good deal. I'm a fan of Abe's. I've bought several things there.

But the question is, did you buy a camera? This seems to be the one item where problems crop up at certain stores in NY and NJ(where Abe's is located) if you don't buy their overpriced accessories...

I've bought a digital camera (Elph S200), MiniDisc player, headphones ($150 ones), a pair of Canon lenses, and a Canon flash unit over the past several years at Abe's.

Never had an issue.

I believe they are. I got a canon DV camera from them 2 years back and received my Canon rebate.

Smooth transaction and no problem.

I found Abe's of Maine's physical address, and used its Zip code against Canon's authorized dealers database.

Canon linky

Looks like they are authorized. The same physical address shows up as Abe's Electronics on Canon's website.

DONT BUY FROM Abes Of Maine!!

They are a NY scam outlet - I bought my Canon from them and they tried to charge me for extras - they had already charged my card and wouldnt ship the item unless I bought extras from them.

BUYER BEWARE OF Abes Of Maine

I would not recommend Abe's. Bought a Nikon D40 from them. It took them quite a while to ship my product ... the reason ... They needed to call me to "verify" my order. Essentially it was a hard sales call to add a bunch of things I didn't want and to sell warranties.

This kind of crap is common of the NY/NJ camera sellers. I would stay away.

I just ordered an external hard drive from them. Afterwards they indicated it was out of stock and it would take 5-7 days to ship. They haven't shipped yet (about 7 days) and they charged my card immediately upon ordering.

I am of the opinion that is better not to buy a camera from what is traditionally a camera outfit, especially if it is one in NY, NJ - with the exception of B&H Photo which is well regarded though not having the lowest prices.

Every few years, I need to learn the lesson again that it is better to pay a little more and have no hassles. If I was looking for a low price, I would pay attention to Amazon.com - for me in California it means good prices generally, free shipping and no sales tax.

Abe's is not a scam outfit. They've been around for years and years and years. I've personally ordered a ton of stuff from them.

I've heard the occasional story of the "call you to upsell some accessories" but they're rare and it's never happened to me.

You say no, they send the stuff, end of story.

I recently bought a Canon XTi. I checked in dpreview.com website and didn't find any big difference in terms of pefformance and quality. However I am salivating at the live view feature. Is the live view feature similar as a normal point and shoot camera's live lcd screen?

No. Read the dpreview more closely and you will see why. Basically it can only be used on a tripod with stationary subjects. It's a gimmicky feature anyway, IMHO. If you want it to work like a point and shoot, use a point and shoot.
