I had a boatload of this stuff all over the house, all running on HomeSeer software...worked great until the modules started crapping out over time...I'd say these are fine for casually playing around, but if you want reliability over the long haul, look at higher end stuff like Leviton or Zwave...

x10.com were one of the, if not THE, original annoying internet advertisers. They all but invented the pop-under ad and used it relentlessly necessitating the birth of the pop-up blockers. At the advent of the annoying pop-under ad, you couldn't get away from them.

That said, it's important to note that X10 is a communications protocol. x10.com is a company that sells products that use that protocol. They don't own the protocol and there are other companies that sell x10 products which don't have a history of being annoying internet citizens (http://www.SmartHome.com among the places that I find non-annoying and that I've had good history with for such items).
