Is this HOT! GREEN!

2 x 1TB (eSata & USB) wrapped in an Aluminum heat dissipating external enclosure! RAID,JBOD,NTI Shadow BUP Software

I have been looking for something that I can store Videos etc... and I wanted to get at least 1TB. They have been going for about $135 on FW posts. Then I figure you then need some space for Back-up. I suppose the back-up doesn't have to be a like kind dup of the videos etc... but can be an image? Thereby saving you some space. I have also been considering backing up to dvd discs, as they are cheaper than drives, but I want to get away from having discs laying around.

For someone seeking 2TB, I see the dual enclosure with RAID as a bonus (My PC comes with RAID 5 configurable software). Downside is that most people, including myself don't have an eSATA port on my PC.

Does it have to be 4 or can it be 3, as I have an additional 500G Drive?

Raid 5 needs at least 3 drives. You lose one drive for redundancy. The advantage is of course that it scales, so although you lose 33% on a 3 drives array, you only lose 12.5% on a 8 drives array...

http://www.acnc.com/04_01_06.htmlan 8 disk raid5 array is not recommended. Once you go over 6 you should start thinking about raid6 which has a second parity drive. Sort of like a hot spare but instant on.

Given that the drives are probably worth at least $150/pop this is a pretty solid deal. Green for you.

Ugg they should have stuck a NIC in that thing

What I am doing for BACKUP of video HDs is using an eSata docking station and whatever is the cheapest (per GB) SATA drives at the time I need a new one. Since videos don't get updated and I pretty much want to keep any I have, I just keep filling up TB drives with videos/music and back them up with the docking station. When a backup drive gets full, it gets sent off to be stored off-site and I get another one. The docking station solution is good because its quick and there is no need to attach any cables to the backup drive.

Thanks for the information. I checked out Docking Stations, and it is an interesting idea. Certainly an option as they arent very costly.

Thanks!
