a little OT:
Use one keyboard, monitor, and mouse to control two computers

is there a product do the opposite? i.e., use two keyboards, monitors, and mice to share one computer? *that* is what i always wanted

I think what you want are thin clients, with no local drive, but a stripped down OS loaded from a rom to let you RD or X-Windows into other computers. I remember when Sun got rid of a whole bunch of these for cheap a few years ago, not sure if these are currently popular.

I lost my Sept08 calls.

This KVM switch is no good and the price is merely adequate, not HOT!

I got one from Ratshack couple of months ago for $10 and my gripes are:

  1. Whenever I switch to the second PC, it takes 10-30 seconds for the USB mouse and keyboard to switch.
  2. The second PC has problem adjusting the resolution.
  3. When the first PC is powered down, the second PC would not have its mouse and keyboard recognized.

I don't believe the unit is defective as I exchanged it twice only to discover it does the same thing (except maybe the #1 was a bit faster with the latest unit.

So in all, spend a bit more and get , for example this one. Added benefit: also switches speakers and mic.

I picked up this model from Radio Shack a few weeks ago and so far it's worked pretty well. Most of the time, it just takes about a second to switch, and maybe ~5% of the time it takes longer (about 10 seconds).

I bought this model from Radio Shack a year or so ago. For the price, it's a good unit. Not perfect, occasionally gives me the "hardware not recognized" error, but if you unplug everything from it and plug it all back in, it works. It's worth the $13 shipped.

If you need to unplug everything and plug it all back in, that means the device simply doesn't work, cause the only purpose of this device is to seamlessly switch, that's it.

The other question is if you want to buy an item that works occasionally although for cheap, or pay a bit more and get something that works all the time... Unfortunately, this is the reality nowadays with half-baked occasionally-working items that filled our markets.

Me, personally, I prefer the device that works and that makes my life easier by... simply working all or most of the time, even if I have to pay a few bucks more for it. There are enough hot deals for such devices too. For example, the KVM switch linked in my previous post was $15 shipped on Newegg 3 days ago.

I bought the PS/2 model at Ratshack (actually, I bought a bunch of them to resell). I tried one, I literally couldn't get it to work. I exchanged it for another one, but I haven't dared try it again.

ha-ha, easy.

plug as many as you want keyboards, mouses into your computer, just keep adding USB hubs...

regarding this one - I own one like this. Not really like it, but had no choice.
My older one uses older PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse so cannot use it with modern wireless mouses/keyboards.

Anyway, here are the issues I don't like:

1. USB switch does not have hot keys combination to switch between computers.
(Well you can use one, but need to install software utility which works for windows only)

2. Sometimes (often) when I run linux under vmware, moving mouse causes switch to another desktop, which is really annoying.
Same thing happens sometimes when I scroll my mouse wheel changing direction fast (unpredictable)
but as I understand these are (cheap) USB switches issues and there is no (cheap) alternative.

Nonetheless, good price for decent product

Green to OP.
