Picked this up over the weekend, last one they had left, new in box. It uses Mini-DV tapes. $59.97 The Sears by my house has amazing clearance deals, so this is probably a big YMMV |

some of these don't have input just output lines to tv, i didn't know that when i bought a similar model ,this one doesn't seem to either ,i really wanted to record from the tv like a vcr but couldn't, i would have to buy a really expensive Sony dv recorder for it to do this. |

That YMMV is indeed huge, but thanks for alerting us. I sincerely HOPE no one calls their local Sears stores to see if it's in stock. Don't call! Don't call! (did I mention not to call?) I just called every single Sears store in the United States. The CSR at each one got very excited about the price, but curiously none of them had them in stock. Hmmmm.... |

i doubt you'll be watching tapes in 50 years. you'll probably have to convert them to another medium that's more compatible with the times. |

I normally make a DVD out of these tapes and don't watch tapes directly. DVDs are easy to scratch and it's a good idea to keep master tapes in case if DVD gets screwed up or lost. We are talking about home made videos where you shooting family events and kids growing up so long term back up is important. Flash memory cards also a good option but with today technology they significantly more expensive then Mini DV tapes and use higher video compression(AVCD)-less video quality. |

The only down side of MiniDV is 60 min limit, other wise why would Sony release HDR-FX1000 in HDV. If you are really interested or so top notch then Scarlet and Red are the future. |

SmashNGrab said: lol, good one. I think he was just trying to say that current flash based/HDD camcorders use a lower quality codec than Mini-DV, although it wasn't a very good comparison. But I am sure that will change in the future, flash based media is obviously the better of the two formats, they just need to develop a superior codec for recording to it. |

Of course Mini-DV is archaic, that's why it's used by most broadcast TV stations to record their HD stock video while on remotes....oh and those Discovery Channel guys with the $15,000 cameras....they use mini-DV too. |
