<<<<<Update>>>>>

10/02/2008:
I just came back from the event in Stamford, CT. They gave each attendee a copy of "Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1". It is a full version but not for resale. (Promotional Copy) All you have to do is use the pin inside of the Kit to register for Windows Vista Ultimate Product Key at "www.registerwindowsvistasp1.com".
Have Fun!!!

People attended the event in Phoenix on 9/25/08 did get "Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1". -Thanks to RebateMonger for confirmation.

Everybody in the room gets the Vista. They hand it out to the line of people exiting the room when the meeting is over. I've been attending these Microsoft events for five years now. That's how they've always worked and that's how they worked yesterday in Phoenix.

I have seen non-registered people just show up in the last event I attended and registered for spots on site. In case the event near you has been fully registered, show up anyway and register on site. -Thanks to cnIsfg for confirmation.

Show up anyway and register on site. I have yet to see MS fail to offer event day on-site registration even when the event was way overbooked. Some registered participants simply don't show up after registering for various reasons. We always have non-registered employees from our office tag along with those registered and they never had a problem getting into the MS events. Absolute worst case is that they turn you away and still give you the software up front for your time.

Added by SlamDonkey: you can use the 32 bit installation serial number with 64 bit media.

Added by Collije [11/3/08]: Also, you need to activate/receive your Product ID # by the end of the year (2008), per the MS Reps.

Thanks OP. However, is is YMMV. I am from Phoenix, AZ. Our event is today Sept 25 and is no longer available for register. You should add YMMV to your title.

I am also from Phoenix and the event is today. Also, we all got the free vista over a year ago at similar event so this is really old news.

I would look forward to attending this event for Windows 7 and get a free copy of 7 at that time.

Scary thought! Aren't they still working the bugs out of VISTA? I'd maybe attend if it was Windows 7, SP1 !!

edited for response comment:
OUCH! The red flames are burning! This was supposed to be a sarcastic comment in jest. I am currently running VISTA (SP1) and am not having any problems.

Sadly I have never seen one of those events in my area.
I guess the Grizzlies didn't approve it.

My company is still using XP as well as my desktop/laptop.
What would be the hardware requirement for Windows 7...... 10GB Ram?

Do they give it away at the beginning or end?

Usually by the end.
I attended one of the Microsoft event called "Heroes Happen Here". It is a 4 hours event however I had to leave early. So I asked the receptionist for the copy and they gave it to me right away.

Thursday, November 13, 2008 - Debating if I should attend just for the Windows Vista® Ultimate 32-bit SP1. Heard they give out just the cd-keys from my brother.

from past experience, the fine print says you will be responsible for tax on the MSRP of the product, people were asked to pay tax on those free office/windows they received from those events, but it's YMMV, please DO read the fine prints.

For TechNet it is usually at the end upon completing the presentation evaluation. Plus you will not likely receive the actual Vista software at the presentation. The last couple of years MS has only provided a product key and a URL that you then use to download the product ISO image from the TechNet site and activate using the product key . Before that MS used their One Plus online software ordering and fulfillment system for local TechNet and MS Partner events but after the massive MS SBS 2003 fraud fiasco from the MS Partner events MS killed off the local MS Partner event tours.

thanks OP, pretty good deal to me. Free is always good. I did however dump Vista Ultimate and put XP back on when it first came out because of how terrible it ran and slowed down my PC. But I think they worked out some of the kinks and it should be better.

Actually during a technet event (at least i think it was technet) earlier this year, everything was on physical media and then the cd key was provided thru the URL, so you might not have to download anything
