Nice deal! Should be the 640GB Caviar Blue inside, since WD doesn't make a 640GB GreenPower drive and they probably wouldn't shove in a 640GB Caviar Black

Anyone know if this supports spindown since it's not a Green drive? I want to use this exclusively for my NAS backup, so spindown is highly desirable.

2 questions:

How do you know what the shell shockers are going to be ahead of time?

Do we know what drive in this this? Are people thinking about removing the 640 and using it as an internal and just keeping the enclosure?

If the enclosure is anything like the three 400GB Elements that I have, they'll auto shutdown either after a certain period of inactivity or when not connected to a USB host.

I will be removing the 640GB and shoving in a Hitachi 500GB to use as a backup drive. IINM, it'll probably be the Caviar Blue SATA, since WD doesn't make either a 640GB Caviar Blue or Caviar Green / Greenpower.

lol we wish it were a black. I think it will be the blue which is WD6400AAKS and is this drive.

So, you are going to use it as an internal drive. Why not buy this for $5 more and get a longer warranty. Usually the external drives come with a 1 year warranty and most internal drives have 3/5 year warranty.

Just note there is no on/off switch on this drive.

Is the deal gone? The ext hd is still marked as $109.99.

Seems odd. Should that be of major concern or just an inconvenience?

Comparing the $79.99 WD 640 GB Elements external drive with 1 year warranty vs. the 3 year warranty on WD 640 GB SATA/300 16 MB, I was about to order the bare drive for the extra 2 years of warranty as I already have a good SATA enclosure which cost $12.99. But then I saw the Seagate 640 GB SATA/300 32 MB for $5 more and decided 2 more years of warranty was worth $5 more.

How does one get to the daily Shell Shocker from within the Newegg site? I know this product is linked but I've only been able to get to the Shell Shocker from the Newegg emails. Is the only way to get Cash Back to go to the Shell Shocker, add item to cart then go through Cash Back page to pay?
