Ripped, hope it's not a repost and some can benefit from this.

I just purchased Brand new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SE for $16000. Sticker price was $24.2K

Deal Breakdown: $15.7K for Minivan - $800 Trade + 5% Mass Sales tax + $300 docement fees = $16K.

Couldn't believe they even took my junker 1999 Caravan on a trade that was hit on the side and needed a new engine for $800. I basically paid $3000 less from the same featured vechicle that I bought in 1999 for $19K.

Before everyone thread craps about Grand Caravan's versus Odyssey's and Sienna's Dodge had LIFETIME warranty on the entire drive train so assuming they stay in business there is not a better warranty. Also this van is about $7K less than a comparably equiped 2008 Odyssey. Until I can get past the minivan years and buy the Viper I saw in the show room I would prefer to spend as little as possible on a vehicle that is more of a necessity instead of a luxury.

I don't think the diff. is that much right now b/c there's $3500 Cash Back + 0.9% APR on the '08 Odyssey. So, people should be able to get the Odyssey about 7-8K under sticker.

but if the difference is about 3k between the two, which one is a better?

Just be aware these things have almost no resale value. There is a huge used car dealer near here that discounts a lot, but even still their prices are much lower on the caravans than Toyotas and Hondas. Right now, they have 2007 GRAND Caravans for $10000. Even at $16000, by next year this van is going to be worth less than $10000. I don't care what blue book is, blue book on the Grand Caravans for $10000 is $16000. It's what you can get for the car/van/truck. You are going to take a hit even at $16000. But if you plan to keep the van for 5+ years, it could be a good deal. Be Aware CR lists the 3.3 V6 at 158 HP or something like that, Toyotas and Hondas are more like 240.

The Honda by a landslide; drivability, function, resale value, power, gas mileage, etc.

Yep this car is a slug and will be worth nothing in no time, but it's significantly cheaper than the competition up front. And Stow-and-Go seats are very handy. Just treat the car as a disposable purchase, because it ain't gonna be worth jack in 4-5 years.

I gave you green, because this seems like a deal on this particular minivan. It is not a comparison of new vs. used, Dodge vs. Honda, or car vs. bike.

Trust me, they had you pay far more for the new one than the $800 they gave you.
Over allowance is done all the time as a trick.
Think about it, how can they give $800 for a worthless (virtually vehicle)

Thats how all new car dealers (and others) are advertising used cars for less than wholesale.
The sucker that traded it in got 1/2 (or even less) of KBB dealer trade in for it.

No matter what vehicle you buy, five years down the line, it's worth much less than what you paid. So you're lucky to get a few thousand for a vehicle with decent miles. I just sold my 2001 Chevy Camaro with 100k miles (which according to most has little resale value) for $6000 originally paid $18,000. Whereas my mother in law sold her 2002 Toyota Camry with 50k miles (which according to most has better resale value) for only $4000 originally paid $22,000.

No car is untouchable when it comes to losing resale value.

There is no way to tell if it is a deal without comparing comparable models. Car prices are determined by demand and competition in the marketplace.

Ferrari

But Honda does best in resale when comparing normal vehicles.

Finally, your Mother in law could have got more for that Camry unless something was wrong with it.

Camaro was discontinued and this has driven the resale market value higher. $6000 is a bargain for that type of car, 300hp, etc.
