PATA drives are a little more expensive as most everyone uses SATA. But here is one WD 500 GB for $74.99+shipping

If you like Seagate here is a 500 GB for $79.99+shipping

J&R has the retail WD 500GB for $85 and $7 shipping. FatCash/Live rebates available. Just saw an ad for the retail Seagate 500GB for $79 B&M Fry's in So Cal but I get taxed
on that!

edit: both of the above are for PATA

You can get the 640GB WD at Microcenter (OEM) for $80 too.

You should watch the Outpost (Fry's) ads. They had the Seagate retail PATA 500 gb for 69.99 with free shipping a few weeks ago. In the middle of the sale, they added a limit of one per household. I needed four for a Venus T4U enclosure so I had family and friends buy them for me. I wish I could have gotten a deal on 750 gb.

That's a nice deal, although it uses 4x 188GB platters. The 640GB models use much denser platters (320GB for the WD and Seagate, 334GB for the Samsung), which gives you better trasnfer rates.

I would get the Seagate over the WD just for the 32mb cache vs 16. It's debatable whether it makes much of a difference but for $5 more it's a no-brainer imo...

Doesn't make much difference. The Seagate has been benched and provides slightly faster (~8%) transfer rates than the WD. However, access times are significantly worse (~14ms vs. 11.5ms for the WD).
If you wanted an OS drive (like I do), you want the "quicker" (low access time) drive, not the "faster" (higher transfer rate) one.

Again, see my post(s) above - you'd want to get a 640GB for the higher platter density if you want performance. If you want a media storage drive, the Calvary is perfect. Despite what WD spews on its site, the 1TB Caviar GP is a 5400rpm (NOT 5400-7200 variable rpm) drive, so it's even slower than the typical 1TB drive. Unless you should be so lucky to get a Samsung 1TB inside (334GB/platter).

Seems like a very good price on the face of things
