Make sure you have these located where they can get proper ventilation. This model gets VERY hot. Check the avsforum. I don't think they would work well in an enclosure (cabinet, media center, etc.). I went by CC to verify what I had read in the various forums, and they do in fact get very hot; so hot you can't hold your hand on them for very long. Other than that issue, the specifications are great for the price and the performance (according to the reviews of course). However, due to the heat issue, I went with the Yamaha RX-V663BL. It only has two HDMI out ports, but other than that drawback, it compares very favorably to the TX-SR606. I purchased it from 6Ave for $349.00 with free shipping. You can get this price if you use a coupon which I found by googling. Just my 2 cents...

It's always smart to provide proper ventilation to all electronics. I have the TX-SR606 on an open rack. A fantasic reciever. Awesome audio processing. Very happy with my purchase.

or you can get the 5100 7.1 system from onkyo direct. I got mine for $320 delivered, it's an identical receiver.

FYI.. it is labeled refurb, but as many knows, onkyo refurm are pratically new. The only thing that looked like it's being returned.. were the actualy manual. That's being if you look at it carefully.

Its time to upgrade my TX-SR600, and this is pretty tempting. Even my current model gets really hot, and I have the leave the door open on the cabinet. In addition to leaving the door open, I've placed a laptop cooler on the top vent, to help the draw out the heat.

well i have my audio through optical and coaxial any way... so it doesn't make a difference. Besides, you can use a HDMI switch if you want.

It doesn't make a difference to you, but HD audio formats such as Dobly TrueHD and DTS-HD can only be passed via HDMI or component audio. You miss out on that with optical and coax.

I have a question. By component audio do you mean the 5.1 rca jacks in the back of a receiver? Those can pass the HD audio signals if one does not have a 1.3 hdmi capable connection?

Yes, a player can pass HD audio using component (5.1 rca jacks) to the receiver IF the player has a built in decoder. I speak from experience with the earlier Toshiba HD DVD players and the higher end more recent players. They were able to decode the HD audio and send it to your receiver via component.

Thank you for the explanation. I am still using a Pioneer Elite 74TXVi and it does have the RCA connections in the back I believe. I really wanted to use the iLink for any Blueray dvd player I bought but they don't make a Blue ray player with iLink I believe. And since the receiver is not hdmi 1.3 compliant it is reassuring to know I can use the rca 5.1 jacks.
