It's tied to email addresses. It did not work for me. As a side note, you can buy at Amazon (through another seller) for the same price -- and NY residents seem to avoid sales tax.

The seller at Amazon (BuyNow Incorporated) is some sneaky affiliate program of Buy.com; find any item sold by BuyNow Inc at Amazon then search down the same item at Buy.com and you'll find the price is identical. Of course the important thing is low price, so it's safe to buy from either one depending on which works in your favor tax wise.

Thanks for the coupon link ratracer, I've added it to the OP. Really sweetens the deal, thanks again!

I wouldn't. Enclosures like that have tiny fans that tend to be both ineffective and loud. If you want quality active cooling (a fan), then go with either the mx-1 or the apricorn ekit. Both have large fans that are under the drives and both are relatively quiet. Alternatively, get a good, all-metal enclosure that makes good contact with the drive -- these are silent and do a good job dissipating heat.

Of course, a lot depends on your noise tolerance and how often you're going to use it. If you're using it for occassional backups and are price sensitive, then wait for a model like what you linked to is offered for FAR. There's no reason to pay $20 for it.

I am very confused,
why don't people just buy an external HD?
instead of this enclosure and then buy an internal HD, I assume?

Maybe you have one or two extra internals lying around b/c you opted for a newer (less likely to fail) drive for the good stuff, idk.

mike0704- for me personally it used to be that external drives were more expensive than buying a case and internal drive (not so much anymore), now it's mostly because of warranty. Most external hard drives have a shorter warranty, I personally prefer buying the external case and getting a Seagate internal with a 5 year warranty. It also allows me to upgrade to a bigger drive in the future (factory external warranty is voided if you open the enclosure).

ewibolo- it's a matter of personal choice, given the small difference in price (less than $9) I would go with the Antec (major manufaturer, better build quality, more interfaces- USB + eSata vs just USB). On a side note the vendor you link to (TechSunny) is safe to shop with, they used to be acortech.com and I've ordered stuff from them frequently (mostly USB cables, they used to be a few cents over $1 apiece in quantity 10 or above).

i second kidcharliemain's reasons. you'll spend a few bucks more but the build quality of the mx-1 is nice and i have yet to find another enclosure this cheap that will cool the hdd this well. furthermore, the enclosure is definitely going to outlast the hdd so you can reuse it later. if you buy an external hdd you'll have to break seals and possibly the enclosure itself to get the hdd out and i can't say how well they keep the hdd cool. a seagate external i had a few years ago was just awful.

Ugh just bought this last week from Amazon for $35 shipped. Oh well. I have two already and you can't go wrong with the MX-1!

Crap. I took about two minutes to read the review before buying, and in that time it went OOS.

What the? Now showing as in stock again. Thanks, guys.

Edit: And what's with the whole shopper offer thingy at the end? They're being really sneaky with the buttons and trying to get you to accept the offer. Shame on you, bye.com.
