Kinda answered my own question - 3x zoom in the 1100 vs 4x in the 850 and face detection missing from the 1100 while the 850 doesn't have 16:9 mode. How about photo quality?

Not that great of a deal, many other sites selling for the same price and no tax. I would spend an extra $30 or so and get a Samsung NV11. It's an overall much better camera with full manual capability just like a DSLR and picture quality is better. Also, it's a 10.1MP (I know it's an overkill, but it wouldn't hurt if you want to print larger prints). I bought the NV11 when it first came out and have gone through a lot of different P&S and I haven't found one to replace the NV11. I do have a background in photography and I have a couple of canon DSLR bodies (pro & semi-pro). But for vacations, the NV11 is perfect.

been hurting for a camera since my sd600 died some time ago. It's not the sd870 I was eying but I couldn't go any longer without, the sd1100is was my second choice and the price was right.

Keep in mind the SD870 is a wide angle camera. The SD1100 is rated, if i remember correctly at 38mm.
yeah I was debating if I wanted to spend the extra coin for the wide angle and a higher optical zoom, but seeing how I'm on a budget and in need of a camera, I think I'll get by fine on the SD1100is for the time being. Hopefully I can call in some debts and pick up a more "advanced" camera like an entry level dslr in the near future.
My SD600 was great, took thousands of pics in the time I had it and would probably be alive today had I not put my knee down on it, so needless to say I have some Canon loyalty going on.
and of course, Canon's are one of the easiest camera's to enable features through software upgrade. Especially the ability to capture pictures in RAW format.
