Apple MacBook 2.4GHz, 2GB, 160GB, SuperDrive, White, NEW - Best Buy B&M - $996
While on the Best Buy website I caught this great deal (for mac people).

Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
160GB HDD
SuperDrive

LINK

Best price ANYWHERE! The price on the Apple site is $3 higher for a REFURB unit. Apple sells this unit on clearance for $1,249.00 on their website! These are BRAND NEW! I picked mine up at the store. Will make a great Christmas gift for my parents.

Not bad for an Apple product. The newer Macbooks look nicer and have some spiffy new features, but they cost around $400 more. Hopefully BB will offer those for a similar price when Apple refreshes the lineup again.

This model has firewire, the new ones don't. If you have an older video camera and use iMovie this is the model for you.

anyone have any hot deals on laptops now? I was excited to see a deal and now the responses dont look good. I'm a student and just need it for homework and such. No gaming or anything. I appreciate any help! I am thrifty (maybe some of my friends call me a cheapo), so I am looking for a rel inexpensive one.

Then this is not for you.
Macs are... fancy. They are a LOT more expensive than PCs. They are better (IMO and in mosts) for video editing and photo editing (the photo editing is up to discussion however).

But, if you need a cheap computer and don't need much out of it, get a cheap PC

Full disclosure: I am a total Apple fanboy and I HATE BB.

Apple has EXACTLY the same model in the refurb section for $999 with free shipping. Apple also offers 1% FatCash. Go to the Fatwallet link
RIGHT HERE
then click on the blue link that says 1.0% Cash Back Rebate Available!
The Apple Store page will open, scroll down the page to the blue logo near the bottom left that says SPECIAL DEALS then click on the blue link that says REFURBISHED MACS, this model is the first one on the refurb page. You end up with EXACTLY the same model for $989.01 after FC (Apple does charge sales tax), you'll get it shipped directly to your door, you won't waste gas chasing a deal that is YMMV at select B&M locations, and Worst Buy won't get a dime of revenue out of your purchase. Everybody wins.

Sorry to crap on your deal ex0dus, but that's how much I hate BB. I'm gonna give you green anyway though!

PS- personally I would recommend spending a bit more and grabbing the Refurb MacBook Pro for $1349, it's a 15.4" screen LED backlit screen and has 256MB of dedicated video memory.

PLEASE stop comparing the MacBook to a $500 laptop. It simply does not compare...small size, more expensive processor (that alone probably costs around $150 more), higher build quality, better design, as well as the OS X operating system and Apple name come at a premium. Comparing the MacBook to a cheapo 15" laptop would be like saying people are stupid for spending $25,000 on a Lexus midsize sedan when they can buy a cheap Kia compact sedan for $10,000. Sure, they both do the same job, but the Lexus is much nicer/roomier, has more features, and will almost certainly last longer.

I actually went to Dell's website and built an Inspiron 13 system equivalent to this model of the MacBook...it came out to $974 + shipping/tax. Yes, you can probably get coupons for it; but I don't think it would be *THAT* hughe of a discount. The MacBook might actually be more equivalent to Dell's more expensive XPS series as far as build quality goes; I don't even know how the build quality of the Inspiron 13 series is.

So please do your research before making a statement like that.

Check out MacMall as well - less than $1300 for a NEW prior generation Macbook Pro, or $1150 AR for a Macbook Air. I'm not judging - just saying there are options. I like the old Macbook, but it's not a high end machine - that's for sure...

The price looks ok. However, there is the design & material defects with this toy. Very possibly, after a while you will have a crack on your right corner, by which Apple tech people says it's with the specification. S

It's not EXACTLY the same. The Apple version is REFURBISHED. This product from BB is BRAND NEW AND SEALED. Apple still sells this version on CLEARANCE for $1249. Get the facts straight before MISLEADING people.

The only difference between an Apple refurb and a brand new unit is the packaging, the refurb comes in a brown box. Everything else from the contents to the warranty is the same (in fact the refurb will quite often come with a more recent OS update). Refurbs are also eligible for Applecare warranty upgrades. Out of almost 50 refurb purchases of laptops and towers (my own household, business, plus friends/associates I have referred) I can think of exactly two units which actually came through with serial tags that said 'REFURBISHED' on them and had serials that did not check as brand new units through the warranty checker on the Apple website, and both of those were in 2004. Chances are particularly good that you will be getting a brand new unit since this particular model is being phased out.

Again, sorry to crap in your thread, please don't take it personally. But the facts are the facts, and the fact is Apple is selling EXACTLY the same thing, cheaper with FatCash, and it's a sure thing shipped straight to your door. The BB deal is YMMV based on instore availability (no shipping available).

Refurbished means it was sold as new and was returned to apple so it is NOT a NEW product. You seem to mix up CLEARANCE with REFURBISHED, if a unit is on CLEARANCE then it is a brand new unit being sold for the first time. If it is labeled REFURBISHED it is then a unit that was sold before but for whatever reason ended up with Apple again and for Apple to sell it again they have to label it as such by law. I can assure you no one will be getting brand new products labeled as REFURBISHED.

It should be pointed out that you are the one who brought up the $500 notebook.

I say this as a Mac user and I'm not trying to argue, but there is a tendency of Mac advocates to pick and choose when it is appropriate to compare and when it isn't. They'll say "Windowz sux because of this and that", but if someone points out high prices or out of date specs then suddenly "it's unfair to compare that because they're so different". (Which is then followed with the inevitable premium car reference that they don't really understand.)

We own 3 Macbooks (Black/White/Alum) and the reason why 2 people have 3 Macs is because our $1500 Blackbook has been a lemon. 2 melted power adapters, cracked topcase, 2 mobo replacements and currently a fan that either grinds terribly or turns off and causes heat issues. I'm still going to keep buying Apple, but I've run Macs since the 90's and anyone thinking the Intel Macs hold the same quality as the PPC days is due for a big surprise.

I like your last statement best. Doing research before posting is a good idea. This is FatWallet so claiming "you can probably get coupons" or "I don't think it would be that huge a discount" just doesn't fly with this crowd.

I was about to bite, but realized this is a MacBook, not MacBook Pro- STILL A GREAT DEAL. Just not for me.

I really moved on this deal. I went to one of those BB promotion events, and topped a $100 off coupon to this already low price, and $100 off for buying an open box unit. Someone must have decided they wanted a the new model, because there was not a scratch on the open box. So I walked away with this machine for only $796 + tax....

Probably not much of a chance repeating this deal, but it convinced me to become a mac user
