BTW - Tax for CA was $33

Below is what showed up doing a search for HP through Live Search.
It shows the 25% Cash Back being combined with a Desktop Savings Promotion, so I think it should work with the instant savings on the MediaSmart Server as well.

What the? I just bought this less than a month ago for $500 - $100 MS Live 20% CashBack. This deal rocks. I wish I could price match.

There is a 21 day price guarantee and today is the twentyfirst day. They credited me $100!

SV2130 takes another $10 off. Offsets the $28 in tax they're charging me.

Note if you use the $10 coupon your CashBack will be $2.50 less. In the end you are still saving another $7.50 so it sweetens it up a bit.

The CPU is more than adequate for its intended purpose. Plus it and the memory CAN be upgraded.

This is a great deal OP. However getting MS to actually pay the MS Live CB with HP and ANY discount or coupon showing on your order is a HUGE YMMV and not worth the risk. Some that purchased early in the MS Live CB program from HP reported success with HP discounts and coupons but I have not heard of a single success since. Yes the MS Live CB does initially post to your Live CB account but when it comes time to claim it MS refuses stating HP reports you returned the item. There are NUMBERSOUS posts here on FW and other deal sites reporting this behavior so beware.

BTW New HP server models are about two months away at CES 2009. However there are rumors that HP has decided to kill their home server program altogether even though new models even from CES 2008 last January have yet to be released . Regardless of which scenario HP decided to pursue don’t let others scare you away from this HP product .It you stream media in your home you will not find a better solution in this price range.

Be careful with using coupons stacked with the Live CashBack. They've been known to cancel CashBack which has been combined with coupons (not immediately, sometime down the line). This is still a good deal if you don't want to build your own.

I don't understand??? with the specs shown, I can build it for less then $200. Why is this a great deal?

AMD Sempron LE-1150 Processor (2.0GHz) $18
1GB DDR2 RAM $10
Motherboard $35
500GB HDD $55-$60
Case + PSU $25
+ WHS $99
$242 total including the software. and this has a faster cpu + more/faster ram. (ddr2 vs ddr1)

Thanks op. Great deal.

Can you link me to 200 total cost?
4 easy swap case and 500 gig, motherboard, cpu, power supply, and memory.
Don't forget WHS software cost 99 (or 109) at Newegg

I am building one on my own, because I have spare shuttle p4 laying around, but I am still tempted at this deal.

Or you can drop Windows Home Server and install Samba on any Unix/Linux distro, or even just install FreeNAS(works out of the box, my technically illiterate sister set it up).

A homeserver doesn't need ANY CPU/RAM requirements: a PII 233 mhz can push files over a network with ease.

Any reason this would not work with multiple items? I'd like to buy 3 or 4 of the HP MediaSmart servers. Can I just get them all on one order or should I place 3 separate orders?

$300 would be an excellent deal - they are typically about $550 regular price. Many IT consultants are starting to put these in for their small business clients strictly for the excellent automated backup feature - they'll use it to back up all of the desktops (up to 10 per box). It'll also backup a Windows Small Business Server, even though it isn't supported.

So what are the chances that you'll actually get the CB knowing that there are instant rebates involved?

FreeNAS is a great product, but it is not Windows Home Server, WHS is great, it does drive pooling, backups, and is a normal Windows 2003 server in the backend, so you can do with it whatever you can do with a Windows 2003 server. I have a WHS box that I built with spare parts, and I am still thinking about this because it is so small. By the way you can upgrade the RAM and the CPU for very little money.

Those counting the $100 MS Live CB as a guaranteed part of this deal are going to be disappointed later. If you are going to risk it there is a limit of $200 Live CB per order so ordering more than two on a single order would mot yield any additional MS Live CB. You would need to place multiple orders. The again if HP did not void your Live CB as described ealier they are know to do MS probably would stating you are reselling them which is against their TOS. IMO TOO tisky IF MS Live CB is the sole basis of your purchase decision.

Agreed! Samba , FreeNAS and other Linux based OS are HARLDY maintenance free and DO require constant ongoing maintenance plus offer little in terms of support. ALL those "free" OS are not really free when you factor in the countless hours required to research the that best confirutation(s) that fits your situation, getting it properly installed and the knowing how to perform the constant manitenance procedures. Plus despite what was posted earlier you non-tech family mmeber is NOT going to install, configure and get a reliable working installation without prior knowledge of Unix or Linux file systems
