I wonder how these would perform with a DVR. Anyone with experience with this one?

ISNT 5400 RPM a bit too slow for 1tb?

Yikes, it is slow.

It's supposed to be slow. It's Samsung's version of a "green drive". The price per GB seems comparable to the sale price on Seagates on WD's green storage drives

If you're just using it as a Data drive then the rpm really isn't that big of an issue. With a lower RPM it'll consume less power and produce less heat. Perfect if you want to build an HTPC or something of the sort.

Decent price, but not really a 'shellshocker' one. Probably be a lot of better deals on BF.

1TB for under $100. Even w/ 5400rpm, it will still be decent for video. not great, bu not bad for so cheap!

Tried to find some real reviews with hard data, but didn't find it in a few pages of a good Google search. Comments do note that the drive is very quiet, so it should be good for an HTPC, and with 333GB per platter, the data throughput is probably great for anything but the most demanding applications and data usage.

This seems like a really good deal for people who just bought the HP Windows Home Server.

I replaced the stock 250 GB drive in my series 3 TiVo with one of Samsung's 1TB 7200 RPM drives about 2 weeks ago.

It's not as quiet as the stock drive, I can hear the drive writing slightly if there's no background noise (whereas I could never hear the stock drive). I doubt it will be an issue.

The TiVo menus are a lot more responsive and smooth. I'd even say that it's faster than my TiVo was out of the box.

Only time will tell if it's durable enough to survive in my TiVo, or if it will start to give up the ghost after a year and a half like the stock drive did.

/TANGENT/ I also had a standalone series 2 TiVo w/lifetime for ~4 years, I sold it to a friend of mine when I bought the series 3 (a year and a half ago). The stock drive in the series 2 is still alive and kicking. Guess they don't make em like they used to.

/RANT/ fair warning, Samsung no longer puts jumpers on their drive that will allow you to force the drive to run at lower speeds (instead, they provide a bootable image that you use to set a parameter on the drive). My desktop is an older MSI board with a via chipset that doesn't do SATA speed negotiation properly. Because of that, I couldn't mount the drive, and thus, couldn't use their boot disk to set the drive to the lower speed. I ended up having to borrow a SATA controller from work).

The WD drive that I yanked from the TiVo DID have a jumper to set a lower speed and I had no issues with it.

/PS/ I highly recommend winmfs for doing the copying.

I meant to quote you BTW

If this wasn't almost 100 bucks and 5400 rpms I would be more over this. If it was more like this. Yes, if you want a green drive then your deal is good OP, if you want something faster and cheaper I would say this is better.

cuz of 5400 rpm use it as a secondary storage. it should be fine.

anyway price is really good for 1TB.

though its a bit slower but it will be lot quieter.

5400 rpm = low power, low heat. If that's not important to you, get a 7200, but don't complain just because it's 5400. There's a huge market for lower power HDs.

i guess the complainers will never understand these drives are storage drives, for tivos, popcorns, ext. encl for istar or the now popular WD media player. everybody who gets this (or a GP) drive knows it's not an OS/boot drive.

I posted this in the other Samsung 7200 1TB for $99.99 w/free ship on 2 thread, but thought it might be very useful here too:

For the 7200 (not 5400) version, Mwave dropped the price to $99.99 + $9.99 shipping for first, $5 for each additional from both of their eBay store's last night.

Here are the qty NET pricing if you use Live.com CashBack (currently 25%):
1x $84.99 each
2x $81.66 each
3x $81.24 each
4x $80.99 each

If you are lucky enough to have a 10% PayPal coupon also, you can stack that with Live.com for a total of 35% back, therefore take $10 off EACH of the above prices, meaning you could get this drive for $71 to $75 EACH depending on quantity.

Nowhere else can you find 1TB new drives for this low! The WD and Seagates and Hitachi's don't hit this level off eBay BIN's yet.
