I posted a similar deala week ago that had 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, 3450 videocard, and a 23" LCD for a smidge more, so this one might be lukewarm to many. However if you don't need another LCD, and could use the 6GB tri-channel RAM and better(?) videocard, then this might end up the better option.

It's not as affordable as most Q6600 systems. But if you work with multithreaded software that benefits from multiple CPU cores (like video editing) this machine should really fly.

Tepid at best.

I thought this is good deal since you probably won't get much discount from the new i7 models.

This is a decent deal.

But knowing Dell, you're probably stuck with a weak powersupply which makes upgrading your video card no go.

By the time you replace the PSU (assuming it's not a custom sized Dell-only unit) and the video card you can darn near build a new one.

These Core i7 Nehalems are still only 4 cores, so threads wise it won't be much different than Q6600. I know they have hyperthreading or SMT, but this is mostly a gimmic. If you are doing something intensive like encoding video then hyperthreading 8 cores isn't going to give you any better performance than disabling hyperthreading and running 4 cores. Now there are some scenarios where hyperthreading can help, such as if one of your tasks uses the floating point unit and the other is integer, or what not but for the most part hyperthreading is only a slight win.

Actually, the best thing about the Core i7 microarchitecture is that sequential individual core performance is significantly enhanced. This benefits you most for apps which are NOT threaded, since you are already hitting the wall, and only i7 can raise that wall. Of course for easily threaded apps such as video encoding you get this same improvement as well (15-25% across the board depending on if it is integer vs fpu work).

Thinking of getting this one instead of the Q6600 since they are in the price range, why not go with the new one, right?
