BFG Technologies is offering a free upgrade to PCI express for anyone that currently owns a working BFG AGP video card. Toss in another $50 and you can upgrade to an even better card. For full details, hit the link. See the chart below for a quick and dirty look at how it works. -HEnthusiast

I wonder what BFG is getting from this. Those AGP cards must having something of value on them. Maybe it's like the catalytic converter thing, where if you collect a few of converters you could (after some work) extract valuable metals.

Maybe there is a lot of gold in the AGP version and they hope to get them back and profit off them, while their new cards( fast as they may be ) they could be constructed of inferior quality.

Free upgrade. Say this with me: FREE UPGRADE. UPGRADE = better.... who the hell provides "better" for free? Something fishy I say, but what?

Anyway... not to crap on topic or anything.

Free performance upgrade is always appreciated. Time to search and take advantage of people who have BFG AGP card but don't know the deal. You could get a 9800GT for the price of a depreciated in value 6800....

Got all excited until I priced it out.

I currently have a BFG 6800GT AGP

I could use a PCI-E card for my new build.

My choice would be BFG 9800 GT OC at newegg only $89.99 after tax.

So, I could send my 6800GT in + $50 + $20(to ship it to BFG?) = $70 I am basically losing my card for $19.99 savings.

No dice. I can eBay my 6800gt for more than $19.99 easily.

Maybe BFG knows that too eh?

I imagine that with BFG's lifetime warranty they are running out of refurbished card's and parts for their 6800GT's /6600 GT's etc. They probably, need to get working cards in to replace the ones that have been dying. With a lifetime warranty if you have one card die and you need to upgrade / refund it in order to fulfill the warranty then it would be cheaper to get people to move to a new standard PCIe slot and then use the cards you get from the trade-in's to fulfill warranties on older slots. I wonder if this would be a good time to try and get more lucrative upgrade deals on cards from BFG. So if you have a dead AGP BFG branded card lying around, then try and get a warranty replacement, if they can't replace it in a reasonable amount of time then suggest that you're open to getting a newer PCIe card to their RMA staff instead. Only problems is that by the chart in the link provided above they seem to be replacing cards with cards with other cards of similar performance. If I were to trade in my 6800 GT a 9600 would be faster, but it is a different class of card. I guess BFG is just offering what they have in stock to the best of their abilities.

After checking the link a second time I'm pretty sure this would be the reason. I doubt that there's exotic metals or something on the card that would be worth a lot of money. This is just a company that has an excellent warranty service (speaking from experience) trying to keep customers happy and costs down by getting cards they can issue as warranty replacement cards.

$20 to ship? I'm sure you can easily ship for less than $8.

Good deal imo. If you're already in the market and have one lying around. Or if you were planning on upgrading.

OP thanks for posting this.
I went with the 9600GT as a free upgrade. That's a significant upgrade from the 6800GT AGP card and really extends the life of the card since the AGP card is upgraded to a PCIe 2 card. For me, the extra $50 was not worth it for the small upgrade to 9800GT - I'll wait for another deal sometime down the road. Here are a few charts comparing the various cards
