This is my first post ;D I've been needing a receiver and have been constantly looking for a better deal than the 606. I of course searched the Hot Deals forum and didn't see it mentioned.

AVS forum links:

Review mentioned in the above post Sound&Vision: Onkyo TX-SR706 A/V receiver

Some people have complained about the DCDi(Upconverting processor)
Like in this post:
rigor said:506 pass-through analogy: mechanical switch that routes hdmi in (3) and out one 606-806: upsampling sucks in all inputs, processes sound and sends outputs (model dependent) through one hdmi out. some are 1080i only some do 1080p. some only upsample hdmi and pass thru the component. problems with some devices (ps3) maybe not dts truhd(blu-ray). read up on AVS forums before buying. 905/906: really nice dcdi that has no issues and can take anything and poop a 1080p signal without any reason of doubt. i mean that is harsh but it is true those $999+ units will do all you dream of. then again a toslink switch $9 and hdmi switch ($40) will work for many folks who dream of $999 refurb receiver but get let down by a $149-599 receiver that just doesn't quite cut it. know what i mean?

Rigor probably has a point to a certain degree but I can't afford a $999+ 905/906. I am really looking forward to retiring the speakers on my TV.

Now with all that mentioned here are some specs:

  • 7.1 Channels - 100watts per channel

  • HDMI 4-in 1-out(v.1.3a to Support Deep Color, x.v. Color, LipSync, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master)

  • HDMI Video Upscaling (to 1080p) with Faroudja DCDi Cinema and Upconversion

  • THX Select2 Plus Certified

  • Audyssey MultEQ to Correct Room Acoustic Problems and to Calibrate Speakers

Search FatWallet for "Polk" and you should find some good deals on speakers. Usually from Frys or Newegg.
Example:
Polk R50 Cherry $60 each + S&H

P.S. Dust doesn't show up as much on Silver as it does on Black.. ;D

Nice find. I've been wanting to upgrade my old SR702. Green for you!

I did a refurb'd 806s for $439+tax instead. The 706s for $349 is a great deal but I like the extra wattage on the 806. Green for OP.

I have a Composite DVD player & a composite TiVo. I also have a Blue ray HDMI dvd player & a HDMI cable box (sometimes i watch HD direct on it).

Can I run everything into this reciever & only run a HDMI cable output from the reciever into the HDMI TV (samsung 46"). Will this let me do that (is that upconverting)?

I really just want one cable from the TV to the reciever & I dont want the picture to suffer (from separate cables).

Upconverting is scaling a standard def source to HD in this instance to 1080P. The 706 has 4 HDMI in and 1 HDMI out so this will allow you to plug in up to 4 HDMI sources and then run just one cable to the TV. It also takes composite, component, and S-Vid so you should be covered. If your DVD is upconverting you probably want to disable that feature in the DVD player if you can as the video processors in the Onkyo are probably better than your DVD player.

As the OP quoted, numerous posts on AVS forum say the 606 / 706 have less than stellar upconversion. If you have something like an Oppo DVD player then you definitely want to let it do the upconverting.

So can I use that same HDMI cable going to the TV for the components running via Svideo, Composite into the reciever? IE multiple wires into the reciever from different connectors (HDMI in, Composite in, Svideo in, etc) one HDMI wire out for the reciever into the TV?

Yes you can, and should, run it through the single HDMI out to your TV as even the "less than stellar" upconversion is probably better than you are getting now through your composite or S-video connections. The added bonus is that you will also reduce your connections down to one as you desire. Good luck.
