As a TiVo analog customer, I'm underwhelmed by this deal. They have yet to contact me concerning any kind of upgrade offer. As a former cable marketer, I see that they're asleep at the switch as they lose customers by the boatload. My yearly subscription ends the end of the month and does not renew... and it certainly won't if they try any trickery by charging me anything as they've done with others, as I changed my credit card to a Norton rebate Visa card with $2 left on it as my payment option! Read the love/hate reviews on Amazon before you buy. Me? I wish Replay would somehow get reincarnated, since the only option for me is a Comcast DVR, which truly sucks. I've had the exact opposite experience with my TiVo's. I own three, and have bought a total of four ... all with Lifetime Subs that have more than paid for themselves (aside from my HD TiVo which hasn't passed the break-even point yet). TiVo destroys all other DVRs out there (aside from maybe FiOs, which I haven't tried). It's not as bad as you make it out to be ... at least in my experience. |

I guess DirectTV just bought up the ReplayTV technology (the service is still being served by DNNA from what I understand), so I guess the possibility is there. I have two 5040s that I love and I just bought another one off eBay to give as a christmas present. The biggest downside as you know, is that the replays are SD and, IMO, not the highest quality SD encoding either. That being said, I love my replays and am still using the one I got 6 years ago. The couple hundred bucks I spent on the lifetime subscription was completely worth it. |

I paid 1100 for my series 3 and lifetime transfer the day it came out. NO REGRETS. Interesting OT article: http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/26/tivo-economics/ Average hourly earnings are around $18, suggesting that TiVo saves time that could otherwise have been sold for around $108 per week. We should also add in the benefit of higher quality television — around $11 per week — and subtract the cost of the annoying service charge, which is around $3 per week, yielding net benefits of $116 per week, or $6,000 per year. The net present value of this flow is around $120,000 per person, or perhaps around a quarter of a million dollars per household. Wow. |

Comparing TiVo to any other competitor is like comparing Apples to crappy sub-par DVRs. There is a reason for the fierce customer loyalty, and that is a vastly superior product. |

I recently bought an openbox Series 3 TiVo from NFM for $149. Tried to activate it online but TiVo said the unit had already been activated...I thought WTF? Know I lucked out and we will see how long it lasts but for now I'm a happy camper. BTW, this is my 4th TiVo and they all have been great---much better than the cable co DVR. |

my Sony branded series 1 analog TiVo turned 7 years old this past august, got it as a gift with lifetime subscription and it still works flawlessly...my brother has the same one and also has had no problems (other than we cant use voip to make the dialup calls) my parents have a hughes branded TiVo with their satellite service that is about 4-5 years old and also with a lifetime subscription, again, no problems so far, other than the cooling fan in the back seems to be getting louder... but on the same token, i have read about the hit or miss quality of the newer devices as well... as far as the lifetime sub, on occasion, TiVo will offer to transfer the lifetime subscription (for a fee of course) if you upgrade your unit...at least it was offered to me in the past... |

and if anything does happen to a TiVo, it is usually a hard drive issue. a 1 TB HD is under $100 now so it is a cheap fix anyway which will more than triple your recording capabilities. |

For those of you who have TiVo, I know this will sound stupid, but here it goes: I already have cable with a tuner box. Does this replace the tuner box? Also, my cable comes with On Demand. Does this work with On Demand? Thanks for the help. |
