There are alternatives to eBay. And, the alternatives are growing very fast (greater than 100% growth per year). The problem is the alternatives are starting from a very low base. But, if eBay continues to do stupid things, with 100+% growth, a year from now we should have a decent alternative.
If google improves its product search a little more, people will use google search to find products rather than going to particular auction websites. If this happens a seller will find it does not matter very much on which site he lists his product.

100% growth per year means nothing if you have 100,000 users. If I remember correctly eBay has more than 100 MILLION. eBay also has billions of dollars in the bank. Most of these companies can't sustain 1/100th that, let alone the critical mass user base to launch an assault on eBay.
Even companies like Amazon are going to face an uphill battle with eBay because they cannot afford to dump the same sort of financial investment into auctions that eBay can. Additionally, they really don't bring anything "new" to the table because much of it has already been done (or is being done) by eBay. It is really like Apple and the iPod. You can try to imitate it, but it's VERY difficult to do. (e.g. Dell and their "jukebox.")
Microsoft invested billions into the XBox division before it started to turn a profit, but they had tons of cash to burn. The online auction market is not the video games market, but it is a competitive one nonetheless. How long will companies be willing to see very little ROI until shareholders convince them to pull the plug?
The old days are over. why would someone want to buy something from a eBay seller when they can get it cheaper, faster and safer from WalMart.com,Amazon.com or other huge retailers? when I buy on eBay,I am looking to buy something real cheap. I want to save a lot of money, if not, then I buy from a major retailer where I know I wont be ripped off.example if its a laptop I buy from Dell with coupon and not be scammed buy a eBay seller. people keep saying Google auctions but that will never be as big as eBay was in late 1999 to 2003. there is just too many alternatives for people to buy from than eBay. key word here is Buy. so unless your selling a endless supply of old junk from your attic or make your own product you won`t make a lot of money. the Wii craze won`t last forever either for the people who still make a decent profit on this.
I still make a lot of purchases on eBay aome are bad some good. There should be some thing more to protect the buyer to build trust. But at the same time Sellers selling lap tops should also have access to protection. I have canceled sales I though were risky on high dollar expensive items. I would hope some one wakes up and brings back something more usefull.
Oh and buy the way I only do eBay part time and my products are unique and I import all my items. I sell 4 times the amount locally at my retail location .I would guess maby the weather might bring in the buyers soon .

any real big time players coming on Soon??
Sure wish Google would get of its ass
~eBay problems~
Slower sales
Negative feedback for no reason
Higer sales fees
Less profits
ass hole buyers.
i don't understand your complains, ass hole buyers??? if there's another auction site don't you think they'll buy it at the site?, less profits means more competetion - you're not the only one making money here. look at it as 99 cents store. you don't make money by selling one product but in volumes.
I advertize if you don't like my terms dont buy.
the new feedbackratings seem to hurt me I get a few negs a month were as before I got none . And the buyer would email me if there was a problem first before a negative slamm. Can I sell on eBay with pvr feedback and just avoid the hole feedback issue??
Pvr feedback? You mean private? No, you cannot keep your feedback hidden and maintain active listings.
thanks tlaxson Since my products are unique feedback is worthless to me I sell more items in my yahoo stroe than at flea bay lol
