Got the notice when I logged into my account. Called customer support and spoke with a supervisor telling him there was no way in hell they were getting my SSN and if they wanted to identify who I was because of increased sales last month, there were other ways. He said they require it and limitations on my account will stay. Using Paypal and eBay for 9 years and they don't know who I am by now? Laughable!

Not sure if they really have your ssn even if you don't tell them. At one time I called for some issue the rep said "to verify your identity please tell me the last 4 digits of your ssn". I was like wtf I never gave you my ssn how do you verify by ssn? the rep did not give a straight answer. They may have it by matching name/address etc.

Done before and can be done again...

Not very reassuring either...

Once your information is out, it's out. You can't change your SSN like you can a lost credit card. Paypal is a tool and nothing more and should be approached that way like using eBay to sell and UPS to ship. They don't need to run a credit check with my SSN to find out who I am. If I had changed all of my personal information including savings account number along the way, I could see the red flag. Nothing has changed except an few more large transactions than normal. I explained why over the phone to them. If you are doing 20,000 a month through Paypal, you are insane. Have you read some of the horror stories from them?

My friend just got this notice too. She has $4xx locked up in there. How can she get around this without providing a SS? She only had very small transactions but I think because she didn't withdraw her money, it accummulated.
