I just received two email notifications about two Norton (Symantec) rebates I did last month. One for $20 and one for $50.

When I clicked both rebate tracking # links, both showed as $20 or $50 Symantec Visa Debit Card!!!

I did both rebates using PDF forms. Both Forms never mention "Debit Card".

I guess there is no way I can fight this since debit card technically is same as cash.

But it is really annoying since

(1)If debit card is stolen before it reaches me from rebate center, then probably I am out of luck
(2)How I can get money from, say, a $20 Norton Rebate Debit Card. If I use an ATM, it will charge some fee mostly!

Anyone has same problem???

Cut n Paste of denco's post:

Here is what you can do, and I suggest people do it so, that Symantec and Symantec Rebates gets a clue.

- Call Symantec Rebates at: 866-727-2461
- Do the language selection
- Put in your Debit Card number as prompted
- Listen to the usual phone tree ("Press 1 ...") messages
- Once through that, press "0" and it should ring through to a representative
- They will ask for your Debit Card number, address and phone number
- Ask them to send you a check to replace the Debit Card

If they give you a hassle, tell them that a Senior VP at Symantec said you could this, which is exactly what I was told by a Senior VP at Symantec.

I did the above, and the representative not only said they would process it, but they were right perky about it.

Yes, adds another 2 weeks or so to getting the rebate check that we were contractually promised in the first place, but you get the check instead of potential problems with the Debit Card.

I recently did a Norton Save and Restore Upgrade for $20. In fine print of the form it does say "$20 Debit Card". Even when you submit online it says debit card. Did you not read the Fine Print ?

If you are sure it does not mention than I am not sure what you can do, but I guess this might be way they go for their upgrade rebates from here on out.

The one I did is $20 Upgrade rebate for PartitioMagic and the rebate form has been there for quite a while and I double checked, no Debit Card mentioned.

Maybe it is a good chance. I always feels a bit weird with mail of Naked Postcard Check so putting debit card in an envelope maybe better.

No kidding! Nothing like a $50+ rebate check/postcard to tempt people that may see it. Never had a problem, but I still don't like it.

Mine shows up as "$50.00 Check" and "$30.00 Check." Maybe they're running out of checks and using debit cards to pay off left over rebates?

They might get a kickback from Visa, but even at 3%, it would be less than $1 on a $30 rebate. Not really sure what the advantage is to them otherwise.

The problem is that the few Prepaid card offers that I have received were almost tossed in the garbage because they looked like junk mail.

I wonder if the Visa cards are preactivated or if you need to call into activate them or if they are activated upon first use. Someone has to be making money on un-cashed rebate checks, so it's seems strange to pay for the cards upfront and then let Visa make the money on interest and unused rebates.

Smart move by Symantec.

They're likely getting a kick back from the bank for the transaction fee. They're probably also going to incur a total cost less then the initial value of the card due to monthly account maint. fees that kick in after a few months which will gradually wipe out any debit balance over time.

I'd guess they're saving about 10% vs. issuing checks.

We'll all start getting Symantec Debit Cards, whether we like it or not (I personally don't like them). I knew that 05-35004 was a Debit Card when I pre-applied Aug. 21st, so that's expected. What aggravates me is that 05-35999 was $20 USD when I pre-applied Aug. 21st, and was $20 when validated Sept. 9th, but has since been changed to Debit Card. I don't feel it's okay to change after validation. I've had problems with Debit Cards in rural Maine before. Yes-I expect they will have to be validated. Yes-there are other odd things with them, too.

I got one $50 card also.

The weird part is that, I just got notification of some other Norton Rebates they just received and according to rebate status, I will get check instead debit card. My guess is that they only will do debt cards on some offer # instead of all offers.

After some thought, I think the best way to dispose of these debit cards is to just buy the equal amount of Gift Card from Office Depot or Staples and then use them for future deals. OD and Staples gift cards never expire. If you have lots of norton rebates by debit cards, then I would just cash out these buying OD/Staples GC as soon as I receive them.

Otherwise you have to keep track of balance on these Debit Cards with the problem of inactivity fee. Too much hassle.

Do not use them to buy Grocery or Gas otherwise you will waste 5% Grocery/Gas rewards offered by many credit cards and also you will have same problem keeping track of balance on these Debit Card with the problem of inactivity fee

I have noticed that when pre-submitting on-line the upgrade rebates say debit card, but if you use the mail-in method the form says nothing about a debit card.

Received on 9/18/06 two Symantec rebate checks ($50 and $20) for Norton SWP 2006.

But you never hear about the checks getting stolen. And if someone does, I'm pretty sure it's mail fraud or the like, and federal offense.

I got a $30 card last night. Used it at CC tonight to buy some FAR software. I actually used 2 $10 gift cards as well (from the Build A Bear deal a few months back that we had never used) and ended up with $7 on a Circuit City gift card, since that I will max out on a future order, vs having to remember to charge exactly $7 and change on the Mastercard. Clearly this is the best thing to do with these things -- just turn them into gift cards for stores that you frequent. Those are much easier to deal with in terms of spending more than the balance, too, since it automatically deducts the correct amount instead of just refusing it.

The amusing thing is that on the mailer, they claim that they did this to make it easier on customers, who complained about having to go to the bank. Who are they kidding?? Let them offer direct deposit if they want to avoid that problem.

Yes they are preactivated, and there is a $3/month fee that starts 6 months after the first use. The expiration date printed on the card was 9/07.

The cards cannot be used at an ATM (the mailer says they do not have ATM access).

I have not received one yet. Did anyone tried getting CashBack from stores after using some amount? I am trying to fined a way of converting them into Cash?

You can't get cash at a store any more than you can tell them to charge an extra $5 on your normal Visa card. The best solution is to turn it into a gift card at your favorite non-5% credit card rebate store.

Or you could use it to buy Amazon GC

How can they justify sending these for rebates that did not indicate that the rebate would be issued in this form?
