I am planning a trip to SF in two weeks and have been looking at hotels - parking is just ridiculous. I wanted to stay at the hilton San Francisco Union Square and the parking costs $50/night there. Was kinda hoping to find something cheaper. Anyone familiar with parking around that area? I've found a location (Stockton-something) for $38/night, but that hardly helps...

UPDATE: I have looked at the hilton Union Square ($130/night + $50 parking + $16 wi-fi), both Westins (about the same), but was wondering - am I overlooking perhaps some of the other off-brand hotel names that might fit under my price point? Ideally I'd like to pay $150/night for the trip. Tried Priceline with no luck so far. Or are there any coupon codes available for the hilton to sweeten the deal?

We spent two nights there back in '08 and we did not go with the hilton parking option. Instead, we parked at a garage just a block or so down the street and saved quite a bit of cash. If I remember correctly, it was $25-$30 and was certainly close enough for us.

Side note: I know you've probably already heard it from other people, but San Fran is really one of those towns where you don't really need a car. The public transport is excellent. We barely used our rental while we were there.

Well, the thing is, I'd be driving there...my dad wants to come with me and we don't wanna fly - coming from L.A. it's not too bad a drive.

Fair enough. When we did drive, we were very pleasantly surprised by how UNcongested the streets were for such a busy city. Even rush hour was a breeze.
Enjoy your trip!

There's a parking garage right around the corner from the hilton Hotel (at the corner of Mason and O'Farrell) that charges $29 for 24 hours, or $15 from 5:30pm to 9:00am. Parking on the street overnight won't work because they have street cleaning from 2am to 6am, and they give out tickets.
If you're staying for more than a a couple of days, the best idea a friend found: Park at an off-airport lot ($10 a day at Anza Parking , cheaper right across the street). Then take BART into town from the airport, for $8. Hotel's about two blocks away from the BART station. You can easily get anywhere in the city faster and cheaper using the subway/cable cars/taxis, and not have to worry about parking.
Hope this helps.

This worked well for me. Dave you must be a very wise man.

I used this parking lot, Sky Park and couldnt help but notice all you need to do is walk 5 blocks to and from the San Bruno Bart station to save half the fare each way per person. About $20 for me. The true fatwallet way. Looks for Sky Park coupons online, I think I found $8 a day.

Thanks, it definitely helps. $29/day I can swing (don't want to deal with trains, etc), but would I be able to have in-and-out privileges in the same day? Also, is the garage open 24/7?

Looked it up on Street View. Downtown Center Garage?

Yep. Sorry, running commentary, answering my own questions here, but hopefully others will also find this useful. In-and-out is $30/day, so only a buck more. Excellent. Beats the crap out of $50+ at the hilton. Yeesh...when I stayed at the SFO Hyatt for $50 a few years ago, I thought $25/night was expensive...of course, it was - especially since that was on the heels of parking for free at a Marriott in Virginia.

If you need to store your car for some days you can get a BART (garage) 'airport parking' permit for like $5/day depending on the BART station you choose. www.bart.gov
